Our Heritage
Yesterday... Today... and Tomorrow

WELCOME...

The Officers and Members of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 463 welcome you.
As a Union Member, you have every right to take pride in your status and the rich heritage that has been forged by our efforts in the past.
The wages, benefits, working conditions and opportunities for self improvement that are in effect today are the product of that heritage and the results of many years of hard bargaining with our employers.

WHERE WE CAME FROM...

When Local 463 was chartered in 1911 for the Niagara County area there were very few charter members. Over the years since 1911 we have grown in strength and membership. Today's members recognize the need for an effective union in order to negotiate fair wages and working conditions and to manage our welfare plans and pension programs. The Brothers and Sisters of the past advanced the concept of pension programs and welfare plans when they were only a dream. The members of our local during the fifties and sixties get full credit for establishing our health, welfare, and pension funds.

COMPARING...

No member in Local 463 would want to work under the following contracts now, but those contracts were pretty good in their day. The fact that each new contract has been an improvement over the previous contracts demonstrates three important points:
First, we've inherited a lot from the Engineers who came before us. Second, we've got an obligation to protect what we've struggled for. Finally, we have a duty to stick together to make things better for ourselves and the future members of Local 463.
We've made a comparison of contracts over a period of fifty (50) years to show how Local 463 has done at the bargaining table.
This comparison of contracts makes it obvious that we have triumphed over the years at the bargaining table.
This chart relates to the money items - the bread and butter issues. It doesn't tell the story of how we fought to win such important benefits as:
      A. The grievance procedure that gives us the right to challenge arbitrary management decisions.
      B. The safety and health protections written into our contracts by the leadership.
      C. The equal employment opportunity provisions that prohibit discrimination.
      D. The working rules that protect our jurisdiction and your job.

NOW...

You see, our Local not only has a proud heritage, it has a progressive future and an exciting NOW. We have been front and center in the fight for all those things that make for a better life at home and in the workplace.
The members of this local elect their officers. Our officers appoint representatives, shop stewards and committee members. All of these leaders are charged with the critical task of keeping our union in the forefront in the battle for individual dignity on the job, democracy in our local, and justice in the workplace.

THE HERITAGE AND YOUR FUTURE...

Years from now, young men and women will join the ranks of this local and hear of the achievements made by those who built and improved it. Your contributions may be an important part of this heritage. You will become part of our future the day you sign on with the International Union of Operating Engineers.
